A Practical Pool Training Guide for Ten Essential Skills

A balanced plan needs more than ten labels. Record what each skill currently rests on, which reproducible task supplies evidence and what happens next. This page produces a coverage ledger and a priority decision; it is not a ranked list of instructors, a copied article roundup or a combined playing-ability test.

Keep coverage distinct from a single-session checklist

The twelve-question resource audits one session’s records. This ten-skill ledger asks whether your broader plan has evidence for different jobs. A row can be maintained, selected for focus, held for a prerequisite or not yet sampled. No row becomes complete simply because you watched a video or made the shot once.

Choose actual resources with defined setup and scoring, then preserve those native units. A cue demo, a bank drill and a match decision exercise have different denominators and cannot be averaged into one meaningful ability percentage.

Fill forty decision cells across ten skills

The skill labels are row identifiers. Four decision cells per row make40cells, not50and not40ability points. Attach a date and version to any actual record. UNKNOWN is useful when it identifies the next prerequisite or evidence gap.

Hypothetical ledger:24documented cells,9unknown and7held for a prerequisite make40. This does not establish60%playing competence. An essential permission or condition hold remains a stop even if many other cells are documented.

Select one focus and one maintenance task

First resolve any condition, permission or rules hold. Then choose a repeated task-specific failure that has usable evidence, not the skill with the most dramatic name. Keep one second task as maintenance only if it does not obscure the primary question.

Example: pattern decisions keep failing because the cue ball does not reach the intended side of the next ball. Select the underlying position task rather than making the pattern longer. Maintain a familiar short aiming row. After the next comparable record, return to the pattern question and label the transfer observation separately.

Use the exact resource for each physical task

Begin with the prerequisite and the resource’s own setup, stops and scoring. The ledger does not supply alternate geometry for a drill you have already chosen. Verify table conditions and the actual rules before breaking, kicking or banking. No safety label makes an illegal first contact acceptable.

Review coverage without erasing distinct scores

Save one native result and one next action for each sampled row. Do not compare45aiming attempts with20cue-demo shots or a pattern decision count as though the percentages measured the same skill. Keep the original attempt definitions, target sizes and interruption categories attached.

At review, move a row from focus to maintenance only when comparable records and ordinary-play observations justify your decision. Unsampled rows remain visible. The objective is a plan that exposes gaps and dependencies, not ten generic topics marked finished.
