Choose DIY Retipping or Qualified Cue Service
The service decision comes before the repair procedure. An inexpensive conventional practice shaft and a match-critical specialized shaft can expose very different protected layers, surface limits and consequences. Use the INSTRUCTION–BUILD–CONDITION–TOOLS–CONSEQUENCE gates to choose the worker and document the handoff; use the separate retipping guide only after every gate is green.

Record the exact equipment and current instruction
If the exact model is unknown, the build is unknown. A generic video, color match or advice for another shaft cannot fill that gap. Contact the maker or choose qualified model-aware service. A single red maker instruction stops the DIY path.
Competition rules can bound tip material and cue dimensions, but they do not grant permission to cut a particular pad, plate, ferrule or shaft surface.
| Record | Evidence | Why it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Maker, model and serial if present | label, receipt and photos | locates the applicable instruction |
| Shaft material and front end | current documentation | reveals protected layers |
| Tip type and diameter | specification or prior service record | defines replacement candidate |
| Care or warranty page | saved page and access date | captures the current service boundary |
| Four-side condition photos | before-service images | separates prior damage from service |
| Use deadline | next match or practice date | prevents a rushed cure or repair |
Apply five gates with no averaging
A single red gate selects qualified service. An unresolved gate must be closed with evidence before work starts. This rule prevents a low consequence score from cancelling a direct instruction or safety stop.
| Gate | Green | Unresolved | Red |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instruction | home service permitted | no exact current page | qualified or authorized service required |
| Build | known conventional layers | hidden layer unclear | specialized protected structure |
| Condition | sound and centered | prior work uncertain | crack, lift, gap or moving ferrule |
| Tools and skill | stable fixture plus passed rehearsal | one step unproved | unsafe cut or unprotected surface |
| Consequence | replaceable practice equipment | cost or deadline unknown | valuable, warrantied, irreplaceable or match-critical |
Calculate exposure without inventing precision
Do not assign a probability or expected-dollar loss without evidence. The worksheet exposes what is at stake and what remains unknown; it is not a statistical warranty calculation.
| Field | Amount or note | Include |
|---|---|---|
| Replacement equipment | $___ | shaft, joint match and lead time |
| Professional service | $___ | shipping, local travel and return |
| DIY consumables | $___ | tip, adhesive, protection and fixture |
| Practice requirement | ___ | sacrificial piece and time |
| Lost-use window | ___ days | full cure, shipping and match date |
| Warranty or support effect | documented / unknown | current exact terms |
Require a successful rehearsal for the green path
- Use the planned fixture and hand protection on a sacrificial piece.
- Complete removal without a tool path toward the body or adjacent protected surface.
- Make a flat square face and center a practice disc on the first clamp.
- Keep adhesive off the sidewall and respect the full cure interval.
- Finish the practice disc without cutting the mock ferrule.
- Repeat after a failure; do not promote an almost-pass to the real shaft.
Interview and hand off to qualified service
| Question | Useful evidence | Red response |
|---|---|---|
| Have you serviced this exact construction? | names protected layers and limit | all shafts are the same |
| What remains in place? | identifies pad, plate or ferrule | remove everything |
| How is the adjacent surface protected? | explains fixture and barrier | sand until flush |
| What if hidden damage appears? | stop and request approval | automatic scope expansion |
| What will I receive? | old tip if safe, photos and care note | no condition record |
Make the decision and route the next task
Example: a practice shaft has exact home-service permission, known conventional layers, sound condition, a passed rehearsal and no deadline. All five gates are green, so the separate model-gated replacement workflow may begin. A second shaft has an unknown protected layer and a match tomorrow. Two unresolved or red gates select qualified service without needing a score.
After service, inspect centering, bond line, tip shape and the adjacent surface before any test hit. Save the returned condition record. This page chooses the worker; it does not replace the procedure or approve any unnamed provider.
Use the model-gated replacement workflow only after all five DIY gates are green.
Use restrained cue-tip care when the attached tip may not need replacement.
